Pennsylvania FAQ

How often must I renew my CDL?
You must renew your CDL every two years in the state of Pennsylvania.  You will also be required to successfully pass the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration physical exam every two years (this is the same physical exam given when applying for a CDL to become a truck driver for the very first time).

What must I do to renew my CDL?
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will send you a renewal reminder in the mail exactly three months before the expiration date of your CDL.  This enables you to renew by mail so you do not have to go in person to the Driver and Vehicle Service Center.

How stable is the truck driving industry?
Simply put, the American economy is dependant upon the truck driving industry to keep it rolling.  Without truck drivers, our nation’s goods and products would not be able to get where they need to be.  In fact, all the items sold at your local super market have at one time or another been transported by a commercial truck.   As the industries within the U.S. economy continue to grow, so do the opportunities in the truck driving industry.

Why do most truck drivers work for truck driving companies, rather than start out on their own?
One reason is the cost of a tractor and trailer, which can be upwards of $150,000. Drivers also like the steady amount of work that is offered by most truck driving companies.  However, once a driver has gained more experience behind the wheel, many like to become owner operators, which are essentially self-employed drivers.

What could prevent me from find a job in the trucking industry?
Most potential employers will look at your history as a truck driver. They will search your driving records to see if there are any moving violations, accidents, or DUI convictions.  However, there are a number of things that may disqualify you, many being serious felony convictions.

Is there any way to replace my CDL if it has been lost or stolen?
Contact your local DMV to replace a CDL. They charge a small fee to replace it.

Does it cost a lot to renew my CDL?
It will cost $50 to renew your CDL. You must also pass a physical exam which may cost extra.

How much can I make driving a tractor trailer in Pennsylvania?
Beginning drivers who work full time will typically start at around $35,000. As you gain industry experience, your pay will increase significantly.

Where are most truck driving jobs in Pennsylvania?
The southern area of the state is the most populated, has the most interstates, and the biggest cities, so most truck driving companies will be located there.  However, a truck driving job will take you all over the state.

If I want to haul a tank, do I need something besides a CDL?
Yes, you will need a tank endorsement. To obtain a tank endorsement, you must apply for it, pass all necessary exams, and pay all the applicable fees. A tank endorsement and a hazardous materials endorsement allow you to pull a tank full of gases, liquids, or hazardous materials.
